ALBORGRIDGuides › Transformer Selection Guide

Define the transformer’s system duty, then select the construction.

Start with where the transformer operates in the system. Then compare oil-immersed and dry-type construction, followed by the required voltage class, performance series and application-specific configuration.

By project role

Distribution transformers

For local utility, industrial, commercial and building distribution. Start with the installation environment and insulation system, then compare performance series only within a like-for-like voltage and capacity range.

Oil-immersed distribution transformer

Oil-Immersed Distribution

Three-phase distribution transformer configurations for outdoor and utility-adjacent applications. Conservator-type and hermetically sealed constructions are offered as separate product families.

Cast-resin dry-type transformer

Cast-Resin Dry-Type

Resin-cast dry-type configurations for indoor distribution and projects where an oil-free construction is required. Enclosure, cooling and insulation class are selected for the site.

Oil-immersed transformer for renewable-energy applications

Transformers for Renewable-Energy Projects

6/10 kV and 35 kV oil-immersed and dry-type configurations for solar, wind, energy-storage, collector-system and grid-connection applications.

Selection logic

Compare performance series only within the same transformer family.

S-series labels help compare loss performance only after construction, voltage class and capacity are aligned. They do not replace a final loss schedule or project technical specification.

Compare like with like

Compare S13, S20, S22 or other applicable series only for the same construction, voltage class, capacity and applicable standard. Use the guaranteed no-load and load-loss values in the quotation for the final comparison.

Construction comes first

Oil-immersed and cast-resin dry-type designs answer different installation needs. Renewable-energy projects add operating-profile, grid-arrangement, harmonic and documentation requirements. A higher series number is not a substitute for selecting the right construction.

35 kV S18, S20 and S22 oil-immersed power transformer

35 kV Oil-Immersed Power Transformers

For 35 kV substations and large industrial or infrastructure facilities. S18, S20 and S22 series are reviewed alongside rated voltage, capacity, cooling method, tap-changing arrangement, connection group and transport constraints.

Renewable-energy transformer configurations

Solar, wind, storage and grid-connection projects are not a separate transformer construction. For 6/10 kV collector and grid-connection applications, we review oil-immersed and dry-type configurations against the grid arrangement, load profile, installation environment, harmonic requirements and required documentation.

Document pack

Use selection guides for comparison; approve project documents before production.

The downloadable selection guides help with early comparison. Once the equipment configuration and manufacturing source are confirmed, the final document pack is reviewed against the approved technical specification.
